The distillery
Glengoyne (from Gaelic "Glen Guin "Valley of the Wild Geese) is a whisky distillery south of Killearn, Scotland, in the Campsie Hills in the Southern Highlands.
Whisky has been produced on site for over 200 years - initially illegally (due to high taxes), but after taxes were abolished, the distillery was legalized in 1833 under the name Burnfoot of Dumgoyne. The first owner was George Connell.
In 1876, Glengoyne was bought by the Lang brothers from Glasgow and renamed Glengoyne in 1905, in the 1960s by the Edrington Group and in 2003 by Ian Macleod Distillers Limited. This makes the distillery one of very few still in independent Scottish family ownership.
The border between the Highlands and the Lowlands runs along the road that separates the distillery and stills from their warehouses. The distillery is located on the Highlands side.
The whiskies are described as slightly sweet, smoke-free and peat-free.
The main varieties are single malts aged 10, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 25 years. There are also various special bottlings and special editions.
